Thermal conductivity of skutterudite thin films and superlattices

چکیده
Experimental results on the temperature-dependent cross-plane thermal conductivity of skutterudite thin films are presented. The films examined include IrSb3, CoSb3, and Ir0.5Co0.5Sb3 single layers, and IrSb3 /CoSb3 superlattices that are grown by pulsed-laser deposition. A differential 3v method is used to measure the cross-plane thermal conductivity of these films from 80 to 300 K. The experimental results show a significant reduction in their thermal conductivity values compared to those of their corresponding bulk samples reported in literature. Possible mechanisms contributing to the thermal conductivity reduction are discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0003-6951~00!00649-5#

Experimental investigation of size effects on the thermal conductivity of silicon-germanium alloy thin films.
We experimentally investigate the role of size effects and boundary scattering on the thermal conductivity of silicon-germanium alloys. The thermal conductivities of a series of epitaxially grown Si(1-x)Ge(x) thin films with varying thicknesses and compositions were measured with time-domain thermoreflectance. The resulting conductivities are found to be 3 to 5 times less than bulk values and v...
متن کاملDynamics of coherent acoustic phonons in thin films of CoSb3 and partially filled YbxCo4Sb12 skutterudites
Skutterudites are considered as interesting material for thermoelectric applications. Filling foreign atoms into the cagelike structure of a CoSb3 skutterudite is beneficial to its thermoelectric properties by increasing phonon scattering while maintaining the electrical conductivity. In this paper we demonstrate the generation and detection of coherent acoustic phonons in thin films of CoSb3 a...
متن کاملThermoelectric Applications of Low-Dimensional Structures with Acoustically Mismatched Boundaries
It is shown that a finite acoustic mismatch between structure and barrier materials in low-dimensional structures leads to the acoustic phonon confinement, which in its turn brings about a corresponding decrease of the phonon group velocity and modification of the phonon density of states. These factors contribute to the reduction of the in-plane lattice thermal conductivity, thus allowing one ...

Thin bonded films have many applications in antireflection and reflection coating, insulating and conducting films and semiconductor industries. Thermal conductivity is one of the most important parameter for power packaging since the thermal resistance of the interconnections is directly related to the heat removal capability and thermal management of the power package. The defects in material...
متن کاملModeling of Thermoelectric Properties of Semi-Conductor Thin Films With Quantum and Scattering Effects
Several new reduced-scale structures have been proposed to improve thermoelectric properties of materials. In particular, superlattice thin films and wires should decrease the thermal conductivity, due to increased phonon boundary scattering, while increasing the local electron density of states for improved thermopower. The net effect should be increased ZT, the performance metric for thermoel...
